The Blood Cloud: The Game

I made a game!

I’m so excited this is finally finished! The Blood Cloud: The Game!
A long time ago KC Green of Gunshow fame tweeted: this was my favorite old game and watch game http://yfrog.com/gz20xqp

He was referencing his book The Blood Cloud which has a story in it called The Blood Cloud [read it here] At the same time I was playing a lot of Game and Watch games at http://pica-pic.com/ and I was inspired by his art so I made it!
I drew all the art and learned Actionscript 3.0 and got really mad at Actionscript 3.0 and almost threw my monitor out the window but then my friend Mike Stanton came to my rescue and saved me! He’s a wiz at this Actionscript stuff so if it wasn’t for him this wouldn’t have been possible! Thanks Mike!

Basically this is a love letter to KC Green. His comics really inspired me to get off my ass and just draw. All the comics I drew this year after attending NEWW were inspired by his energy and ability to get a funny idea down on paper and get it out to the readers. I’ve read The Blood Cloud probably 20 times and it keeps getting funnier every time I read it.
Anyway, enjoy the game! I loved making it [except for the parts I hated!] and hope you like it!

Eric

You know the type! The good thing is because this comic takes place so long ago these guys are totally dead now.

Hey buddys!

This year I got the chance to hang out with a lot of people that I really enjoy hanging out with. Twice during these hang outs Brian Fukushima bottomlesspop recorded some video. I then went home and did some things to them, here they are!

First up is Steve Wolfhard monstro_draw dancing!

<lj-embed id="34" />

Then I did a thing to it:

<lj-embed id="35" />

Then, at a wedding for Tom preachertom and Sara heypais Brian was recorded doing this:

<lj-embed id="36" />
That is what I have been up to!

Eric!

Hey guys! So you might be wondering where I've been the for the past few months! Well, here's the thing. I went down to the south western United States and I visited an old ghost town. In the basement of an old abandoned mansion I found a box buried underneath some rocks. Inside that box I found this... I.. I think it's someone's 24 hour comic from 100 years ago! I scanned the whole thing so you could check it out. This crazy!

Here is the link to read all of them:
24 Hours

This is crazy.
Eric

ps oh I guess this is also the debut of my new website then?

Hey there people! I just wanted to post a final thing about Tomb. I wanted to show a few thumbnails and the first images I did when trying to come up with a look for the comic.

These are the thumbnails for the first 25 or so pages:

These are actual size to how I draw them. I have 3 pages of these full of little panels and tiny tiny text reminding me what lighting or facial expressions should look like. I call these cockroach comics because of their size. The difference between me and Jess finkenstein is that she doesn't really do thumbnails at all. I live off of them. I did not do a single page without thumbnailing it. Also I did the entire book in sequence. I don't know if other people work this way? There were times that I wanted to skip ahead and color a comic that would be more fun but I kept going sequentially for some reason. I guess I felt that if I only drew the pages that I really wanted to draw I'd just put off the pages that intimidated me.

I also would leave some thumbnail panels blank and say to myself "By the time I get to that page I'll have figured it out." That has never happened to me. A blank panel in the thumbnail stage is basically a wasted night of me trying to think of a way to get the skeleton all the way out to an outhouse miles away...

These are some of the first drawings of the Barbarian. He didn't change much at all but then again I guess he shares many facial features with Conan. I swear they were subconscious! Anyway, there he is with a bag of something that he probably stole. He's like that.

I think when I first drew him my hand almost knew that he was going to have a hook necklace on. It's one of those weird things with drawing where some part of your brain is like "Yes, of course he always looked like that, you just hadn't drawn him yet!" I didn't want it to be your standard magical talisman. Something with jewels on it and a demon face with light up eyes. It's just a simple hook that at some point in it's life obtained the ability to bust ghosts.

The top drawing in this is the first sketch of the curator I did in 2007. The second drawings underneath that are new sketches of the curator in probably late 2008. He looks much better. He also got to keep the mustache! Good for him! I loved drawing him. I had never drawn a character with a head shape like him before, just this balloon stretching out of a collar and there was something about him that just excited me to draw.

These are some drawings of me trying to figure out what the ogres look like. I wanted them to be animal like which was tricky because they look so human. I kept pushing their eyes farther and farther apart which I guess means Ogre to people but it eventually made them look mentally slow. But you can see that I always meant to give them a penis.

The three stooges pretty much came out correct on the first shot. I didn't really realize until now that I had set up the ghosts of dead adventurers being used by the artifact in the first few pages of the comic. In my head I just said "I need some ghosts... Ghosts come from dead bodies... I guess I need some dead bodies!" But even looking at these sketches I have a bashed in skull that an ogre would obviously have done and an arrow in the eye which is the skeleton warrior's M.O.

And here we have the first drawings of the skeleton warrior. Super Secret: The skeleton warrior was a woman the whole time! I had originally had the idea that when the skeleton warrior grabs the artifact towards the end of the story the artifact would burst out with energy and it would kind of trace out the old living body of the skeleton warrior and it would be revealed that it used to be a woman. Probably a woman that tried to steal the artifact but died and had it's bones resurrected to protect it. I cut this because I didn't want to give the impression that the skeleton warrior was now somehow MORE than it was before it touched the artifact. Like it got all it's old memories back or something. Anyway, the skeleton warrior was a fun character but bones are only fun to draw for so long!

This final image I have to show is the first test I did for adding color and shading to the comic. I wanted something I could do quickly and that looked good and that limited me in my choices. I always get bogged down in choices so I only let myself use one brush that was a certain size and I only had 2 levels of tone and white paper that I could use. This first test is much sloppier than what I ended up with and if you look at the 3rd page second panel of TOMB you can see that I was trying to keep the sloppiness and happy accidents going but eventually I forgot to keep it up.

Anyway thank you so much for reading TOMB. I started it on Christmas Eve after coming home from a sushi place for dinner. I started drawing the barbarian and skeleton and then some how convinced myself to start TOMB officially. I still don't know how I found the strength to do it or the will to continue [I am quite the lazy fellow sometimes!] but I'm glad I did and I'm glad people read it.

Thanks again,
Eric
